Groton School cancelled classes Tuesday after a record-setting blizzard blanketed the Circle with about 30 inches of snow. January 27, 2015, according to available records, was only the second snow day in the history of the School.

"It's the most snow we've ever had in one snowstorm here," said Director of Buildings and Grounds Tim Dumont, whose staff worked long hours to keep pathways clear and safe. The famed Blizzard of '78 produced 27 inches of snow. continued

Groton Trivia

This Month's Question
How is one of Groton School's first masters associated with one of Boston's finest museums?

The winner, chosen at random from correct entries, will receive a Groton T-shirt. Submit your answer here.

Last Month's Question
What were the school colors before red, white and black?

Answer: No one responded with the correct answer. We changed the colors because they were the same as the St. Mark's colors: blue and white.

Ever notice how crowded the health clubs are at this time of year, thanks to all those people who made New Year's resolutions to "get in shape"?

There's another kind of fitness worthy of a New Year's resolution: firming up your estate plans and writing or updating your will. While it may seem daunting—and not nearly as enviable as six-pack abs—it can save your family heartache and uncertainty.

Groton School's website offers a will-planning tool to help you get organized.

If you're able to include Groton School in your plans (or if you already have), we will be thrilled to welcome you into the Circle Society. The Circle Society is celebrating its 20th year, and we seek to mark the anniversary by enrolling new members.

Groton's website contains an array of useful information on estate planning. We invite you to click around and explore, and to be in touch with any questions. Elizabeth (Betsy) Ginsberg P'16, in Groton's Office of Alumni and Development, can be reached at or 978-448-7584.

Speakers Enlighten,
Spark Discussion on MLK Day

Groton School celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with two speakers, each provoking deep reflection about how we can be more empathetic, compassionate, and open-minded toward one another.

On Sunday afternoon, Dr. Michael Fowlin performed "You Donít Know Me Until You Know Me," a one-man show that uses powerful character sketches to burst stereotypes—about certain ethnic groups, athletes, gay people, the disabled, and others—and to make the hurt of discrimination, bullying, homophobia, and insensitivity real and intimate. continued

The Winter issue of the Groton School Quarterly will land in many of your mailboxes soon.

It features a Q&A with Caitlin Reed '91, a physician and epidemiologist who traveled to Liberia this fall to work with Ebola patients. The issue also includes an essay by Jeremy Hubball '65 that reflects on his experience listening to the Ali-Liston boxing match with former Headmaster Jack Crocker. You'll also find photos from Lessons & Carols and the fall play, athletic recaps, Chapel Talks, Form Notes, and all the other usual Quarterly fare.
