If you want to spend your entire semester behind a desk taking lecture notes, don't come to faculty member, Marlena Rodriquez' Intro to Sociology class. Now that it is extended to a full year course offering, she promises a ten month experience that examines the historical, theoretical, and practical elements of sociology.

The course is divided into three segments. The first, entitled "Developing a Sociological Perspective", introduces students to the field of sociology. Consideration is given to how social factors affect daily lives. Areas of study include social organization, tools of sociological research, culture and diversity, socialization and society, social influences and interaction, and collective behavior and social movements. Two long-time Gunnery supporters, Richard "Dick" C. Colton and Virginia "Gina" Hamilton Solley de Sieyes Risley deCourcy were honored recently for their generous service and contributions to the school. Both were active on The Gunnery's Board of Trustees. Dick joined in the spring of 2007, and Gina, trustee emerita, was the first female chairperson of the Board. Both have also been major contributors to the Annual Fund and the Campaign for The Gunnery.

Dean of Students, Robert Reinhardt and Director of Residential Life and Student Activities, Kate Merritt, joined other members of the school community in officially naming the Dean of Student's Office in honor of Mr. Colton. [continued]

The Gunnery honors seven of its athletes named to all star teams in their respective fall term sports.

The coaches of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference have named Jamie Kruczek '09, captain of the team and daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Kruczek of Orlando, FL, and Christina Cornell '09, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Steven Cornell of Washington Depot, CT to the Girls' Field Hockey Division C All Star Team. Within the past few weeks, receptions sponsored by the Head of School, Susan Graham and the Advancement Office were held at the Red Eye Grill in New York City, the Guild of Boston Artists in Boston, and Zola in Washington, DC. Alumni and parents chatted, networked, and celebrated Gunnery's past, present, and future. Hors d'oeuvres were served, stories were shared, and pictures were taken.

Under the tutelage of directors Tom Gruenewald and Chris Waldmann, an ambitious cast undertook the production of David Ives' All in the Timing, a series of six one act plays exploring language, communication, and, yes, comic timing. The segments, ranging in time from the ancient era of Babylon in the "Babel's in Arms" to the modern Manhattan cocktail party in "English Made Simple", each had a premise which enticed the imagination. "Mere Mortals" displayed three construction workers who believed they were famous historical personages as they ate their lunch fifty stories above the ground. In "The Philadelphia" nothing the protagonist said produced the desired outcome, but, rather, its opposite. [continued]

Hess Days gave all the students a chance to work on the upkeep of The Gunnery's buildings — in this case painting the front of Gunn Dorm. Through the years, Gunnery students have answered the call of community service in many ways such as working in soup kitchens, at Southbury Training School, working at Special Olympics, and raising money for worthy causes. This year we picture the football team adopted a local family for Thanksgiving, purchasing the food and baking the pies.

Like so many institutions, The Gunnery has been pursuing sustainability options for several years. These efforts have involved the students, the faculty, the administration, and the trustees. In the current business and political climate, these efforts have come to the fore, addressing both the financial and the environmental concerns of our entire community.

First, a little history: You may have read previously in these columns of the institution of the Environmental Science class and its eight-year monitoring of the Shepaug River and report to the Washington Environmental Council. You may also have read of the establishment of a Green Club and the successful challenges to the student body both to save on electricity (February 2007) and recycle drink containers (February 2008). The tradition of community service is clearly illustrated in this 1975 photo. What are these boys doing? And what was the program called?

Brandon Dufour '02 may have graduated from The Gunnery a mere six and a half years ago, but that didn't stop him from getting involved with the school as an alumnus. As the youngest member of The Gunnery Council, he joins 22 other alumni/ae who are volunteering their time to give back to an organization that is very meaningful to them. [continued]

We are sure that most of you are aware, but for those that aren't....The Gunnery can be found on Facebook. While several pages exist (most we know of, others we probably don't want to know of), we would like to give credit to The Gunnery Alumni Network Page. We particularly like this page created by Brandon McKenzie '02, Ari Baum '03, and Lane Goldberg '03. These networks were created by you, the alumni, so we don't want to interfere; however, we will make periodical wall postings giving you reception information and photo uploads.
