We are only a few weeks into the winter sports season, and both girls and boys varsity hockey have started off strong. The boys saw huge wins over Choate-Rosemary Hall, Williston Northampton School, and one of their biggest rivals, Berkshire School. They also participated in the Avon Old Farms Tournament. The girls saw a win in their first match of the year against Millbrook and played in the annual Exeter Tournament. Both teams competed in the Cushing Tournament. The boys' team won it for the first time. To read more on Gunnery's hockey teams, read the Highlander Review.

Nineteen millennial alumni/ae returned to The Gunnery to host a panel on the college years, a highlight of the Young Alumni Homecoming event. Current senior and junior students listened as the former Gunnery students shared their experiences both before and during their undergraduate years. Amye Waterhouse '06 who interned this past summer in The Gunnery's Advancement Office created this event with the hopes of keeping young alumni connected with the current student body. "It's a good opportunity for the kids," said Mark Rhoads '04. "I felt the most important lesson is that in college you have unlimited options. You should follow your passion." [continued]

This year on Friday, January 15th at 7:00 PM in the First Congregational Church Meeting House on the Green, The Gunnery invites everyone to join in commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year's program will feature the story of Venture Smith, an 18th century slave in Connecticut, who bought his freedom and became the 18th century equivalent of a millionaire businessman and landowner in East Haddam. All members of the community are invited to attend. Admission is free. For more information call 860-868-7334, ext 251.
Dr. Robert Hall, associate professor, Department of African American Studies at Northeastern University, will reenact the persona of Venture Smith who dictated his own story to a schoolteacher in 1798.

Gunnery student-athlete Michelle Beck '10 recently signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Texas to continue her studies and row for the crew team. Shelly ultimately felt that the University of Texas provided her the best opportunity to thrive both in the classroom and on the water. "The campus was really nice," said Shelly, a native of Redding, CT. "I wanted to go somewhere entirely different from where I grew up."
Shelly describes the University of Texas crew program as "competitive and intense." Practice is held every morning at 6:00a.m. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, an additional afternoon practice including weight training is required. Races are held on Saturdays and Sundays. "Twelve girls were up for this scholarship. Only five got in. It was really cool when I received the letter."

With three very different musical performances in December, The Gunnery Performing Arts Department spread celebratory and inspirational holiday spirit to all. Vocalists and musicians offered a wide variety of musical offerings, ranging from the classical to the contemporary.
Undaunted by the extreme cold, The Gunnery Troubadours performed several Christmas standards including "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Silent Night," and "O Holy Night" on the steps of Brian Memorial Town Hall during Holiday in the Depot on December 11th.

When the Grahams and members of the faculty hosted the annual freshman dinners on December 7th and 14th, there were plenty of chances to express youthful enthusiasms, dreams and desires.
The girls gathered with Mrs. Graham and female members of the faculty for dinner and ice cream sundaes and then met in small groups to talk about their year so far as well as their hopes for the future. The highlight of the evening, organized by Kate Merritt, Director of Residential Life, was the opportunity to design and draw their dream freshman girls' dorm.

Jim Von Gal '59 had some answers for the picture of a New Year's Eve party. "Those were held in the old dining room in Brinsmade during the 1950's. I'm not sure when they stopped. I believe this picture was taken around 1953 or 1954.

The girl in the left center with dark hair and wearing a V-neck top is my sister, Betty von Gal. Many alumni will remember our father, Irving von Gal, who was the proprieter of the "PO" from right after WWII until his retirement in the early 80's.
The boy and girl linked arm in arm slightly in front and to left (as we face the picture) of my sister are Mathew and Vicki Chess. Mathew was a member of the Gunnery class of 1961 who, tragically, was killed in an automobile accident in February, 1959, during his sophomore year."
