The Gunnery cross country team issued its most dominant performance of the year on Wednesday as they handily defeated Forman School. The team placed nine of its runners in the top ten with Sean Turner once again leading the way. Sean finished the race with a final time of 18 minutes and 49 seconds. Not far behind were Joseph Lobb and Tristan Kishonas. The three have been the top runners for the Highlanders all season. Also finishing in the top ten for The Gunnery were Darius Ware, Justin Moreau, Max Schwan, Allen Chang, Drew Absher, and Dan Zoldy. The win improves the team's record to 3-1.

The Gunnery Drama Society's fall production of Arthur Miller's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People is already making an impact on campus — and it hasn't even opened yet. In an effort to garner student interest and ownership, The Gunnery's curriculum committee selected the play as a summer reading, making it a requirement that all students read Miller's work before their return from break. "The play has been tied-in across the curriculum," said Jennifer Wojcik, Performing Arts Department Chair. "Students are discussing the play in the English and history classes. Here, they learn about the structure of a play, characterization, character motivation, and supporting philosophies."

Mrs. Wojick, who is also directing the play, felt that Miller makes Ibsen's play contemporary and relevant to a modern day audience. She describes the show as "multi-layered." She and the students are learning something new about it every day. So far, she has received excellent response from the students, particularly the cast. "The cast is very strong and has a good sense of pride. They are interested in hearing about what other people have to say about our interpretation of this play."

An Enemy of the People will be presented on November 13th and 14th at the Emerson Performing Arts Center at 7:00p.m.

Kelly Williams '00 fell into a career in naval architecture completely by accident. The New Orleans native always had a love for architecture in general; however, never in her wildest dreams, did she see herself working as a naval architect marine engineer for Kvichak Marine Industries. After studying civil engineering for three years at St. Mary's University in Nova Scotia, Kelly returned home to Louisiana to study architecture at the University of New Orleans. A college-ice-hockey player in Canada, she asked her father to sign her up for classes. It wasn't until she returned to New Orleans that she realized all the classes he signed her up for were in naval architecture. Instead of freaking out, dropping out, or passing out, Kelly went with the flow. [continued]

"I wanted to get the kids away from the idea that community service equaled fund raising," said faculty member, Karen Lincoln. "While that certainly is an important component, it is not everything." Therefore, all tasks completed by the community service group have been hands-on. Most recently, Amanda Kloth '11, Angela Seo '10, Clarence Park '10, Hallie Bonnar '10, and Millie Huang '11 helped with the Judea Vegetable Garden in Washington, CT. This garden project was started last spring by Gunnery past parent, Denise Arturi with the intention of helping local soup kitchens. Local churches and schools (including The Gunnery) were contacted for help. The students built a compost bin and fence, weeded, and hauled rocks out of the garden. "I have been really impressed by the kids," said Karen. "The kids said this is the best thing they have ever done, despite all the hard work."
