Year-end Giving Has Benefits, But Be Mindful of Dates

Year-end Giving Has Benefits, But Be Mindful of Dates If done carefully, charitable giving before year-end can provide you with a double benefit. First, you will be supporting the good works of Hartford Hospital. Second, if you itemize deductions on your federal income tax, incentives may enable you to do more than you realized possible.

To receive federal income tax benefits for those who itemize deductions in tax year 2010, the timing of gifts is critical. For checks, the date you deliver or mail your donation is generally recognized as the gift date for tax purposes. Gift checks mailed via the U.S. Postal Service with postmark and check date on or before December 31 will be counted for 2010, regardless of when they are received. more
